What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the root canal system. The root canal system is the inside of the tooth, composed of the dental pulp, which runs from the tooth’s crown to the root tip. Endodontists are trained to diagnose and treat issues related to the root canal system.

At Neeley Dental, we provide comprehensive endodontic services, including root canal therapy, retreatment, and surgery. Our skilled dentists, Dr. Steven Neeley and Dr. Michael Litchfield, are dedicated to providing our patients with the highest quality care. He takes the time to thoroughly explain the treatment plan and answer any questions you may have.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to save a severely damaged or infected tooth. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp of the tooth are removed, and the inside is cleaned and sealed. Dr. Neeley or Dr. Litchfield perform the procedure and can complete it in one or multiple visits.

Root Canal Process and Procedure

Dr. Neeley and Dr. Litchfield are experienced dentists who specialize in root canal procedures. During a root canal procedure, he will first x-ray the tooth to evaluate the extent of damage and plan the best way to approach the treatment. Dr. Neeley or Dr. Litchfield will then use a dental drill to remove the damaged tissue inside the tooth’s root. Once the damaged tissue is removed, he will clean the inside of the tooth and fill it with a special material to protect and strengthen it. Finally, he will seal the tooth with a unique filling material.

Dr. Neeley and Dr. Litchfield take a gentle and caring approach to all his root canal procedures. He will numb the area around the tooth to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. Dr’s. Neeley and Litchfield also make sure to take the time to explain the process and answer any questions the patient may have. After completing the process, he will provide a detailed follow-up plan to ensure your recovery goes smoothly. He will also provide information on caring for the tooth and what to expect in the days and weeks following the procedure.

Does a Root Canal Hurt?

Many people worry that getting a root canal will be painful, but the truth is that modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure relatively painless. Most people will report no pain during the root canal procedure. You may feel some pressure, but you should not be in pain. After the procedure, you may experience soreness in the area for a few days, but you can manage this with over-the-counter pain medications. If you have any concerns or questions about the procedure, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist.
